Commemorating a Philippine National Hero:
Markham to break ground for Rizal Monument

MARKHAM, ON – June 7, 2018 – Join the City of Markham on Sunday, June 10 in the Box Grove Community Park as we break ground for the Luneta Gardens featuring a Rizal Statue. This first-of-its-kind project is the result of a partnership between the City of Markham and the Filippino Canadian Community of Markham. Once built, the garden and life size monument will be a significant addition to Markham's public art portfolio and will honour Dr. Jose P. Rizal, a Philippine national hero.

Under the leadership of Councillor Alex Chiu, the Filipino Canadian community of Markham has kindly gifted the monument to the City of Markham. It was commissioned last year as the community's contribution to Markham's Canada 150 celebrations. The groundbreaking will be part of the 120th Philippine Independance Celebrations, with a flag raising ceremony at the Markham Civic Centre at 11:00 a.m.

According to the artist and creator of the monument, Mogi Mogado, this gift “will honour a man who spent his life advocating for ideas and principles that inspire generations of freedom fighters around the world. Dr. Rizal’s writings embody ideas that inspire and support multiculturalism in Canada, and harmonious living amidst diversity as exemplified today in our thriving Markham communities.”
